My answer to If an alien asks you if you recommend living on Earth, how would you respond?
Answer by Vijayendra Mohanty:
Yes I would recommend living on Earth to an alien, but it will be more for our benefit than theirs.
I am of course assuming that the alien species in question is capable of surviving on Earth. If not, they should be at least able to create a sustainable habitat for themselves on our planet.
The main reason I would want aliens to settle down on Earth with us, would be so we can live in the awareness that we are not alone in the universe. Finding life on another planet will be nice, but plenty of people will deny it and choose to maintain their view of Earth’s uniqueness. Even communicating with alien life forms would be less than convincing for many. They would perhaps chalk it up to “NASA conspiracies”.
Nothing will be quite like seeing actual beings from another world living among us. Their very presence will help a lot of human beings break free from the dogma of human exceptionalism. It will cause humanity in general to finally see space as something more than a black canopy littered with shiny specks of light. It will encourage us to question every arrogant assumption we have made as a species about ourselves and our place in the universe.
There will still be deniers of course, but the actual presence of aliens amongst us will dull the edge of their opposition over time. And if they don’t change their minds, their children will grow up politely disagreeing with them.
There will be other benefits of course. Perhaps the aliens will bring us knowledge, perhaps they will tell us where we stand in their world view. Or perhaps we will receive the joy of having helped travellers from another world. Either way, regardless of what shape these additional benefits take, my main reason for asking aliens to settle on Earth will be entirely selfish.
