If the death penalty is something you have a position on, start making up your mind on whether you are truly on the side you are on. Should convicted terrorists be hanged? Should rapists be hanged? Should the man who tortured and killed Cecil the lion be hanged? You can’t have customised responses for different situations because this is the law we are talking about. The law stops being the law if it is not treated like the law. We either accept the fact that there are some crimes we want to kill for or we come to the conclusion that there is nothing, absolutely nothing, that justifies the state taking someone’s life.
PS: Personally, I am undecided on the death penalty. I resist the urge to believe that there is no hope in some cases. But I also recognise the political expediency that must be taken into account in some cases.
