I think that what differentiates human beings from animals is the fact that we take notes. Think about it.
Civilisation is based on successful communication of information. If you invent something and tell no one about it, the invention dies with you. It survives and does good to people other than you only if you write it down and give it to someone. That way, your invention becomes reproducible by others.
Note that by invention, I am referring to more than just instruments. A poem may be an invention, so may a breathing exercise.
In the relatively long run, it is not inventions that take civilisation forward. It is their being copiable. Your notes, written in a language only you would understand, would be of no use to anyone. Not only do your notes have to make sense to anyone who reads them, they also have to be reasonably easy to implement.
